Native Adventure at Bone Creek Recreation Area

Please join the Longleaf Pine Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society Saturday March 25th at 10:00 a.m. for a native adventure at Bone Creek Recreation Area – 4915 Bone Creek Rd. Holt, FL. (map link below).
We will carpool from the University Mall NE parking area in front of JC Penney and across from Firestone Tire leaving at 9:15 a.m.. It is about a 40 minute drive from there. After Bone Creek we will visit a location about 9 miles south near the Yellow River/Guest Lake area. We should be done no later than 3 p.m., however you may leave at any time. You do not need to be a member to attend this event.

The Bone Creek Rec Area is part of Blackwater River State Forest and is a gem of a location to see native plants. The trail is about a mile long loop around Bone Creek Lake passing through both wetlands via boardwalks and uplands. Plant highlights include:

Drosera intermedia – Waler or spoonleaf sundew – “Listed as a threatened plant in the Preservation of Native Flora of Florida Act”

Pinguicula primuliflora – Southern butterwort – Listed as “endangered” – imminent danger of extinction within the state

Sarracenia rosea – Gulf or decumbent pitcher plant – “Listed as a threatened plant in the Preservation of Native Flora of Florida Act”Acer rubrum – Red maple
Aronia arbutifolia – Red chokeberry in flower
Cliftonia monophylla – Black titi in flowerCornus florida – Flowering dogwood
Crocanthemum carolinianum – Carolina Frostweed

Gelsemium sempervirens – Yellow jessamine
Illicium floridanum – Florida anisetree in flower
Lonicera sempervirens – Coral honeysuckle
Lyonia lucida – Fetterbush
Magnolia grandiflora – Southern Magnolia
Magnolia virginiana – Sweetbay Magnolia
Morella cerifera – Wax myrtle 
Morella inodora – odorless bayberry
Orontium aquaticum – Goldenclub
Polygala nana & lutea – Candyroot & Orange milkwort
Rhododendron viscosum – Swamp azalea (in bud)
Symplocos tinctoria – Common sweetleaf/horse sugar in flower
Vaccinium Spp. – Many species of native blueberry in flower
Viburnum nudum – Possumhaw
